The iPhone 17 Pro Max has been out since September 19, 2025, and nearly a year later it’s still Apple’s flagship — and one of the most searched phones on the planet. Whether you’re deciding if it’s worth the upgrade from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or 16 Pro Max, or just want the full spec sheet in one place, here’s everything you need to know about pricing, camera, battery, design, and where to get the best deal in 2026.
iPhone 17 Pro Max Release Date
Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro Max at its “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, 2025, alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro. Pre-orders opened September 12, and the phone officially launched on September 19, 2025. It ships with iOS 26 and has since been updated through iOS 26.5.
iPhone 17 Pro Max Price (2026)
Good news for anyone who held off buying at launch: pricing hasn’t budged since release.
- 256GB — $1,199
- 512GB — $1,399 (est.)
- 1TB — $1,599 (est.)
- 2TB — $1,999 (est.)
Unlike the smaller iPhone 17 Pro, which jumped $100 to $1,099, the Pro Max held its price steady at $1,199 for the base 256GB model — the same starting price as the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The 2TB storage tier remains exclusive to the Pro Max; the standard 17 Pro tops out at 1TB.
Where to Get It Cheaper: Trade-In & Carrier Deals
If you’re buying in mid-2026, don’t pay full price without checking these first:
- Apple Trade-In — Up to $195–$695 in credit when you trade in an eligible iPhone 13 or newer, depending on condition and model.
- Verizon — Up to $1,099 off with select unlimited plans.
- T-Mobile — The phone can be free with trade-in on Experience More or Experience Beyond plans.
Since Apple regularly runs seasonal promotions and carriers rotate their trade-in bonuses, it’s worth comparing current offers before you commit.
Design: Aluminum Is Back
The biggest visible change on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the shift away from titanium. Apple moved to a heat-forged aluminum unibody enclosure, which the company says improves thermal performance and battery capacity compared with the titanium frames used on the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro lines. A vapor chamber filled with deionized water sits inside to pull heat away from the chip during sustained workloads like gaming or 4K video editing.
The back now has a distinctive raised camera “plateau” instead of the old square module, and the phone is protected by Ceramic Shield 2 on the front (Apple claims 3x better scratch resistance) and Ceramic Shield on the back (rated 4x more crack-resistant).
Colors: Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, and Silver.
iPhone 17 Pro Max Display
- 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display (6.86 inches measured on the standard rectangle, since corners are rounded)
- ProMotion adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz
- 1,000 nits typical brightness, 1,600 nits HDR peak, 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness
Camera System
This is where the Pro Max makes its biggest leap over last year’s model. All three rear cameras are now 48MP Fusion sensors:
- Main camera — 48MP Fusion, ƒ/1.78, 24mm
- Telephoto — New 4x tetraprism lens, 56% larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s telephoto unit, covering both a 100mm (4x optical) portrait-friendly focal length and an 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm via sensor crop — the longest zoom reach on any iPhone to date
- Digital zoom — Up to 40x, up from 25x on the iPhone 16 Pro Max
- Front camera — A new Center Stage camera with Apple’s first square sensor, delivering up to 18MP photos and a wider field of view for selfies and video calls
The updated Photonic Engine leans on machine learning for noise reduction and color accuracy, and iOS 26 added the new “Bright” Photographic Style for enhanced skin tones.
Performance and Chip
The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs on Apple’s A19 Pro chip with 12GB of RAM. Early Geekbench benchmarks on the same chip in the iPhone 17 Pro showed roughly 15% faster single-core CPU performance and about a 22% jump in multi-core performance over the previous generation, with Metal graphics benchmarks showing around a 35% uplift compared with the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
Battery Life
Apple says the redesigned internals free up more room for battery, giving the iPhone 17 Pro Max its best-ever battery life — up to 4 more hours of use per charge compared with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Independent reviewers have consistently called out battery life as one of the phone’s strongest upgrades.
Storage Options
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the only model in the lineup offered up to 2TB of storage, alongside 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options — useful if you shoot a lot of 4K/8K video or ProRes RAW files. There’s no card slot, and the phone uses eSIM only (no physical SIM tray).
iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: What Actually Changed
- Titanium frame → aluminum unibody with vapor chamber cooling
- Same $1,199 starting price, same 6.9-inch display size
- New 4x tetraprism telephoto lens with extended 8x optical-quality reach
- Digital zoom jumps from 25x to 40x
- New Center Stage square-sensor front camera (18MP)
- Up to 4 more hours of battery life
- A19 Pro chip replaces A18 Pro, with double-digit CPU and GPU gains
Should You Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2026?
If you’re coming from an iPhone 14 Pro Max or earlier, the combination of the new telephoto camera, longer battery life, and A19 Pro performance makes this one of the more meaningful upgrades in recent iPhone history. If you already have an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the gains are real but more incremental — the camera and battery improvements are the strongest reasons to consider jumping now, especially if you can offset the cost with a trade-in.
With the iPhone 18 series expected later this year, mid-2026 is also a reasonable window to find price cuts or bundled carrier deals on the 17 Pro Max before Apple’s next launch cycle shifts attention (and inventory) to the newer model.
